Reading Workshop
Reading Workshop in fifth grade looks very different from the lower grades! Students participate in Read to Self, as well as Work on Writing. Students have a short mini-lesson time, where we work on Word Work, which is our spelling practice for the week. A general week has students practicing their spelling words, sorting them based on the specified rule for the week, and the final test is on Friday.
A short reading mini-lesson follows Word Work. Here students are doing a variety of things that include: working in reading notebooks, taking notes on a reading strategy, practicing a reading strategy, participating in an interactive read-aloud, or demonstrating knowledge of a strategy. We do a lot of partner and group work during mini-lesson time!
The majority of our reading block is taken up with Guided Reading and Read to Self. Students get a lot of time each day to participate in Read to Self. This is a time when they pick books to read based on their interests. Students may also be working on a book review at this time. Different requirements for book reviews vary by the quarter.
If students are not participating in Read to Self, they are working with a teacher on Guided Reading. This is a very intense time of reading at their reading level. Students are assessed using the Fountas & Pinnell Benchmarking System at the beginning of the year. Students are grouped in groups of 2 to 6 to enjoy a variety of fiction and non-fiction text.Books are selected based on the needs of the students. During this time, students read silently to themselves, as well as out loud to the teacher. The teacher completes a record of the student reading. Students are given teaching points on different skills that will help them become more successful. Guided Reading groups change as the needs of our students change. Groups go through different levels as they grow as readers. This is my favorite part of the day because it's great to see students as they grow into master readers!
